Their appearance and properties are subject to obvious physical laws.
In fact, the lightning - it's just a very powerful electrical discharge. It is similar to those which sometimes occur when actively comb the hair clean and dry plastic comb or rub woolen cloth ebonite rod. And in fact, in both cases accumulate static electricity, which is discharged in the form of crackling and bright sparkle. Only in the case of a storm cloud instead of the weak crackling thunder is heard. Lightning occurs when the electrification of thunderclouds at which a strong electric field inside the cloud. But it may be a legitimate question: why is going on electrification of clouds? After all, they have no solid objects that could rub and collide with each other and thus create an electrical voltage. In reality it is not so difficult as it seems. Thundercloud - it's just a huge amount of steam, the top of which is located at an altitude of 6-7 km, and the bottom does not exceed 0.5-1 km above the earth. But at the height of more than 3 km from the surface air temperature is always below zero, so the steam inside the cloud turns into little icicles. And these pieces of ice are in constant motion due to air currents inside the cloud. The smaller pieces of ice, so they are easier and getting into updrafts of hot air rising from the ground, they also move to the upper clouds. On his way up the little pieces of ice collide with larger, and each such collision is electrifying. This small ice particles are positively charged, and large - in the negative. As a result of such movement at the top of a storm cloud accumulates a large number of positively charged ice particles and large, heavy and negatively charged ice particles remain in the lower layer. In other words, the upper edge of the thundercloud is positively charged, and the bottom - in the negative. And when large oppositely charged areas are quite close to each other, between them there is a glowing plasma channel through which charged particles are rushing. The result is a lightning discharge, which can be seen as a bright light zigzag. Electrical clouds field has enormous strength and during lightning discharges released great energy about a billion joules. Lightning discharge may occur inside the thundercloud, between the two neighboring clouds or between a cloud and the earth's surface. In the latter case, the power of electric discharges between the clouds and the ground proportionally more power and electrical energy passing through the atmosphere, may cause a current capacity of up to 10,000 amperes. For comparison, it is worth remembering that the current in the ordinary household wiring does not exceed 6 amps.
